We're in the middle of a retaining wall build in Urbana, Ohio - and this one's a serious job. The homeowner needed proper support and structure around a basement walkout, and that's exactly what we're building. No shortcuts, no guesswork.
Here's what the process actually looks like. It starts with excavation - getting the ground shaped right before a single block goes down. We run mini excavators and hand tools together to make sure the base trench is clean and level. That foundation work is what separates a wall that lasts from one that shifts and fails in a few years.
Once the base is set, the block courses start going up. We're using a textured block in a deep burgundy-gray tone - the kind that holds up to pressure and looks solid doing it. Behind the wall, we're packing in gravel and using a heavy geotextile fabric to manage drainage. That part matters a lot. Water buildup behind a retaining wall is one of the biggest reasons walls fail, so we build drainage into every project.
We also use a plate compactor to lock in each course and make sure the gravel base is dense and stable. Every step in a retaining wall build has a reason behind it, and we do each one with intention. This is what good wall work looks like while it's happening - not just in the finished photos.
The final product is still coming, but the bones of this wall are already something to be proud of. If you've got a slope, a walkout, or a hillside that needs to be tamed, this is the kind of work that gets it done right.
